Cryptic diversity in a vagile Hawaiian moth group suggests complex factors drive diversification

چکیده
Allopatric speciation should be the dominant model of diversification across archipelagos because islands naturally promote isolation. It also follows that ecologically similar, vagile species more resistant to this kind isolation due dispersal and unifying selection. In a closely-related group endemic Hawaiian hawkmoths, we found confounding patterns inter-island connectivity did not correlate with vagility, ecological specialization, or island age. Speciation occurred both in allopatric sympatric taxa, only oldest youngest fostering single-island species. The intermediately-sized, central supported combination widely-occurring lineages, suggesting no clear pattern leading current diversity Hawaii. While some are relatively common, others apparently extinct very rare, even on same island. Further research into specific mechanisms for these Hyles may prove broadly informative understanding cladogenesis improving conservation planning. Our study identifies one new Kauai unique mitochondrial lineages H. perkinsi, which

متن کاملCryptic diversity in the Antherospora vaillantii complex on Muscari species
The anther smut fungi in the ustilaginomycetous genus Antherospora (Floromycetaceae, Urocystidales) that infect monocots, are currently placed in nine species. Against the background of the generally observed high host specificity in smut fungi, the broad host range reported for some of the species suggests much higher diversity. Antherospora vaillantii s. lato includes anther smuts on differen...
متن کاملPhylogeny of Philippine slender skinks (Scincidae: Brachymeles) reveals underestimated species diversity, complex biogeographical relationships, and cryptic patterns of lineage diversification.
The spectacular, virtually endemic radiation of Philippine semi-fossorial skinks of the genus Brachymeles represent one of the few radiations of scincid lizards to possess both fully limbed and limbless species. And yet, nothing is known of the phylogenetic relationships of this exceptional group. Morphologically similar body plans have made it difficult to assess species-level diversity, and t...
متن کاملCryptic designs on the peppered moth.
In a provocative recent book, Jonathan Wells (2000) decries what he discerns as a systematic pattern in how introductory biology textbooks "blatantly misrepresent" ten routinely cited examples offered as evidence for evolution. Each of these examples, according to Wells, is fraught with interpretive problems and, as such, textbooks that continue to use them should at the very least be accompani...
متن کاملCryptic diversity in intestinal protists.
In the past few years our understanding of genetic variation within and between species of intestinal parasitic protists has changed significantly. New species names have been assigned and others have been dropped in response to new data. In this review, I summarise these findings and discuss their implications for future studies. In several cases the findings suggest that caution needs to be e...
